MP4 vs MOV vs MKV vs AVI: Which Video Format Should You Use?

5 min read · Updated 2026-11-01

MP4, MOV, MKV and AVI are containers: boxes that hold video, audio and subtitles. The box matters less for quality than the codec inside, but it decides where the file plays and what extras it can carry.

MP4: the safe default

MP4 plays on virtually every phone, TV, browser and editing program, and platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok accept it. With H.264 video and AAC audio you get small files at good quality. If you are unsure, choose MP4.

MOV: the Apple and editing format

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container. It is what iPhones and many cameras record, and it holds professional codecs such as ProRes. Mac and iOS handle it natively; Windows usually needs a player such as VLC for unusual codecs. For sharing, convert to MP4.

MKV: the flexible archive

MKV is open and can store several audio tracks, subtitle tracks and chapters in one file, which is why it is popular for films and media servers such as Plex. Its weakness is support: iPhones, some TVs and some editors cannot open it directly.

AVI: the legacy format

AVI dates from 1992. It plays on very old players and software, but it lacks modern features and compresses poorly, so files are bigger. Use it only when an old device or program insists on it.

Quick recommendations

  • Uploading or sharing: MP4.
  • Editing on a Mac or in Final Cut: MOV.
  • Keeping subtitles and multiple languages: MKV.
  • Old DVD or USB players: AVI or MPG.
  • Your own website with open formats: WEBM.

Does converting change quality?

Changing only the container can be done without re-encoding, so the picture and sound are untouched. That is what Fast mode does in the converter whenever the codecs fit the new container. When a file must be re-encoded, choose the High setting to keep nearly all visible detail.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, MP4 or MOV?

For compatibility and file size, MP4. For editing in Apple tools and professional codecs, MOV.

Which format has the best quality?

Quality depends on the codec and bitrate, not the container. All four can hold the same H.264 video at identical quality.
